Within the frame of the implementation of the EIT Raw materials Blow UP project No 160320, on 26-27 June 2018, a Workshop was carried out in Sofia. The host of the Workshop was Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IOCCP, BAS). Prof. Suzana Gotovac Atlagic from the University of Banja Luka, the project participants from IOCCP, BAS and other scientists took participation in the Workshop.
During the Workshop the following lectures were presented:
- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bojko Tsyntsarski, IOCCP, BAS :” Activated carbons from waste biomass: Preparation and application”. The selection of appropriate waste biomass and the procedures of its treatment for the preparation of high quality activated carbons was the main topic of the lecture. For the first time results for the preparation of activated carbon from aronia industrial residues were reported and compared with activated carbon, obtained from cherry stones. The physicochemical characteristics of the obtained activated carbons and their advantages for the water purification from Cd2+ ions and application as catalyst supports for methanol decomposition were reported.
- Prof. Dr. Suzana Gotovac Atlagić, University of Banja Luka: ” Mining, materials and nanotechnology as development chances for East Europe”. Novel results for the utilization of waste from mining were reported.
- Prof. DSc Tanya Tsoncheva, IOCCP, BAS: “Activated carbons from waste biomass as catalysts support”. New data for the application of activated carbons, obtained from peach stones from the industry for the preparation of effective catalysts for hydrogen production via methanol decomposition were reported. Data for the effect of the carbon texture and surface characteristics, which were purposely tuned by the variations in the carbon synthesis procedures, on the state and catalytic behavior of the supported different transition metal oxides were reported. The higher catalytic activity of carbon-based materials as compared to their silica supported analogs was demonstrated.
During the meeting Dr. Suzana Gotovac visited the Laboratories in IOCCP, BAS, working in the field of novel carbon composites and catalysis. She became acquainted with the main procedures and the apparatus used for the activated carbons and catalysts preparation and characterizations. The apparatus used for the catalytic tests related to the environmental protection were also demonstrated.
During the Workshop, a very useful discussion of the obtained results and exchange of ideas were carried out. It will be contributed to the successful implementation of the project.
